Krakens and Lies is the third and final book in The Menagerie trilogy by Tui T. Sutherland and Kari Sutherland. It is preceded by Dragon on Trial.
Cover[]
The corner of the Wyoming Menagerie's lake holding a kraken. A mermaid is seen swimming away, a webbed hand is shown, and Xiang[1] swimming near a kraken, who is breaking out of its enclosure.
Plot[]
The book starts out with Logan Wilde inside of the Sterlings' study, looking at a map of a plan for a new amusement park, which bears eerie resemblance to the Kahns' Menagerie. Logan takes a picture of the map and tries to start leaving Jasmin Sterling's party, but forgets that she and Blue Merevy are also in the room. Jasmin sees they are looking at the map and fondly recollects about a time with Zoe Kahnwhere the two girls went to the Sterlings' amusement park. Logan and Blue try to explain why they must leave early, and eventually they leave, along with Keiko Kahn, who is shown to be talking with Marco Jimenez, Violet, and two unnamed girls.
As they are leaving, they see Jasmin on the steps and Blue reassures her that her party will be awesome. Blue and Logan then chat about Jasmin, then after Logan notices that the pumpkin carvings look like mythical creatures, he theorizes that they were never given kraken ink. They then approach the house, where Logan asks why the Sterlings never wondered what was inside the walls of the property. Blue replies vaguely about 'a thing' and Logan asks about it, but Blue replies, 'The whatchamacallit that makes your think about it so that - hey, your wig is falling off.' Logan notes that Blue doesn't seem to notice the subject change. They then knock on the door, where Ruby Kahn, dressed as a Twilight vampire, opens it, and then they come into the kitchen. Logan shows the Kahns the photo he took of the map, and they are shocked. Mr. Kahn calls down Ruby, who asked about what Zoe had done. Mr.Kahn asks her about lying to them about the kraken ink. Ruby quickly replies with no, and Mrs. Kahn asks her again. Ruby then tells them she did, and Mr.Kahn asks Matthew Kahn to go get Kiri the qilin. The qilin's horn turns blue (a sign of dishonesty).
To be continued...
